I bought my first plant back in 2018 and it’s taken me time to learn how to really look after them and help them thrive. I’ve shared a couple of tips below.

1. Do your research.

If you see a plant you like don’t buy it straight away. Find out what are it’s general needs like watering and sunlight, if it’s a fussy plant, whether you have the time & space to be able to care for it. The research will also help you feel more confident about being able to look after it as well.

2. Don’t always buy big plants, sometimes buy them small.

It’s exciting to buy big plants but sometimes buy them small & you’ll get to enjoy them growing over time. Most importantly your knowledge of being a houseplant parent grows over time and I don’t know about you but I’d feel better accidentally killing a baby plant than a big one.

3. Don’t seek perfection from your plants.

They may look tired, leaves may brown or they may not be growing as quickly as you’d like. I feel like our houseplant obsession is leading to people seeking perfection in something they feel they can control. But plants have a life of their own of course and are sensitive to the elements as well as how you treat them. Go easy on yourself.

4. Use empty jars to propagate plants.

Sometimes you’ll lose leaves, don’t throw them in the bin, get them in a clear jar with water and they’ll start to grow roots. Some plants don’t take well to water propagation so do a bit of research beforehand.

5. Wipe the leaves

Your plants leaves with gather dust over time so try to wipe them down to enable to thrive properly.
